Papermaking/Letter Press Printing

Richard has developed a hands-on living history program that introduces students to the historical methods and techniques of Colonial papermaking and printing. He brings an 18th century English Lever Press, designed after the Franklin press in Philadelphia, and authentic papermaking tools to this performance. Richard incorporates contemporary environmental issues into his program, such as "quiet fire syndrome," animal habitats and the long-term effects of chemicals in modern papermaking and printing processes. Teachers receive a piece of handmade linen paper with a "heart and scroll" watermark.
