Handmade Paper & Books
Richard introduces students to the ancient methods and techniques of
paper making and book binding. Students produce their own hand made
linen papers and explore various historical methods of decorating,
including 15th century Turkish marbling, 12th century Japanese
Suminagashi marbling, embossing, and, decorative flower embedding.
Students then use an 18th century letter press to print their projects.
This residency also emphasizes environmental issues such as the "quiet
fire syndrome" and paper recycling efforts. In association with the
Philadelphia Handmade Paper Company, Richard's work focuses on efforts
to bring to life the colonial past. He has designed a mobile, hands-on
living history program that transforms a classroom into a scene from
18th century Colonial America.
