Wheat Weaving
This residency introduces students to the history, technique and art of
wheat weaving as practiced worldwide. Linda discusses the roles wheat
plays in historical and contemporary life, including agriculture,
construction and fashion industries. Students learn ancient wheat
weaving techniques that have origins in Greek, Roman and Egyptian
societies. Threshers, people who harvested grain, made wheat weavings
as part of the celebration of a successful harvest. Linda teaches how
contemporary straw artists have turned an ancient craft into pieces of
art. Students learn how to plait (braid) wheat and work on individual
and group weaving projects, such as hearts and harvest maidens. Linda
has been a straw artist for 10 years. She is a juried member of the
Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the National Association of Wheat
Weavers.
