This is an excellent introduction to the method composers use to create visual images or moods through musical structures, and harmonic and melodic techniques. Students will listen to a variety of program music, from Ellington's Mood Indigo to Rimsky-Korsakov's Procession of the Nobles, and use their imagination to create a scenario, visualize a painting or imagine a story.
Grades 3-12
Variations
Hearing a recurring theme throughout a series of musical variations can sometimes be harder than you think. The theme and variation structure was prevalent in the 17th century, but the quintet demonstrates how it was used in folk songs as well as by contemporary composers, such as Hoagy Carmichael.
Grades 3-12
