Melodias de Cuba

Musicians Jesús Alvarez and Carrie Lavender bring the lively music, dance and culture of Cuba to the stage in this interactive presentation of the country's distinctive rhythms, instruments and dialect. Jesús, a professional touring musician and educator, and Carrie, a musician and Spanish teacher, play guitar, percussion and sing traditional Cuban songs, sharing an appreciation for Cuban culture with students.

Workshop: Cuban Son Rhythms
In this hands-on workshop, students learn about the rhythmic elements and origins of "Cuban SON" a popular musical style in Cuba. Some of the rhythms, nengón, kiribà and changüí are examined and students learn the characteristics of each, practicing on a variety of percussion instruments. Content and skill level is adjusted according to grades.
