Doc will demonstrate how and why. Students will also learn call and response songs and dances from various African provinces. This program, presented in a classroom setting, also gives students the chance to play percussive rhythms that, in many cultures, reflect the rhythms of daily life and culture.

RESIDENCY: Journey of the Drum
This residency presents a unique opportunity for students to spend time with Doc, learning the history, culture and technique of traditional hand drums and percussion instruments from the Caribbean, African Diaspora, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Cuba, Brazil and the United States. Doc presents the percussion instruments in a historical, cultural and material context, including how the instruments are constructed, tuned and played in various cultures. Students learn simple and complex rhythm techniques in group circles and one-on-one exercises. The core mission of the residency is to use percussion as a conduit to teach students not only about percussion, but how to work as a team (ensemble playing) and practice their listening skills.
