Playwriting: Adaptation - Lit!
The creative fire is lit within students when they connect to a piece of literature by adapting it into a play. Themes may be curriculum-based, drawn from fables, fairy tales, folk tales, myths, short stories or novels. Janet works with students to chart the plot and decide which scenes are essential to the drama. As students improvise and write the core scenes they develop characters and create scenery. Students sharpen their literary skills by observing the transformation from literary adaptation to an original play. Janet studied acting in Paris and performed there with Theatre Praxis, which adapted children's classics and toured theatres and cultural centers throughout France. She is the founder of Journey Theatre Company and created a touring adaptation of The Olive Lake: A Chinese Fairy Tale and Three Short Stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer.
