Traditional Egyptian Dances
Barbara Siegel introduces students to the rich diversity of rhythms and dance movements from Egypt. With the goal of recreating an Egyptian Village Dance Festival, students learn and discuss its relevant cultural context, focusing on language, history, agriculture, traditional and modern lifestyles. Students will learn about the diverse populations living in Egypt, such as the Fellahin, Bedouin, and Nubian peoples, as well as traditional dance movements that reflect aspects of village life such as water gathering, combat and wedding celebrations. Habiba is a Middle Eastern dance scholar and author. She studied at the Martha Graham School, with master teacher Ibrahim Farrah in New York and at the Reda Troupe School in Egypt. Habiba is currently an academic fellow at the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
