Chinese Puppet Show
Chinese puppet theatre is an ancient
art form that originated in the Han Dynasty 1,000 years ago. Puppet
theater artist, Hua Hua, presents a collection of vignettes based on
Chinese folk tales. She uses marionettes, string, hand and rod puppets
to portray the characters and stories. Hua Hua has 30 years of
experience performing as an international artist. She has performed
with China Puppet Arts Troupe, Masque Theatre and the Ming Ri Theatre,
and has had performances in US venues such as Jim Henson International
Festival of Puppet Arts. She is a graduate of Beijing Performing Arts
Academy and is currently a guest lecturer on traditional Chinese
Puppetry at the University of Connecticut.

In this workshop following a
performance, students learn how to design and build shadow puppets and
screen.

RESIDENCY: Shadow Puppet &
Shadow Mask
This residency provides with a
hands-on opportunity to learn about Chinese puppet theatre and its
history. Students draw and construct masks and puppets. They develop
and write stories; create screen with scenery and perform for an
audience made up their school's community. This residency plays
emphasis on creative activities involving team work, group problem
solving and cooperation.
