Hailing from a family of Royal musicians who trace their
lineage back 400 years to the Moghul courts of North India,
Shafaatullah introduces students to his family's musical heritage. A
virtuoso on the sitar (plucked string instrument), surbahar (bass
sitar) and tabla (pair of drums), Shafaat demonstrates the rich
history, culture and traditions of Indian classical music. Students
will learn the Indian rhythm cycles, the language of the tabla drums,
how the sitar is tuned and played and, about the art of improvising
Indian classical music. Shafaat tours regularly in the United States
and around the world, and appeared in the film, "Pulse: A STOMP

In this hands-on workshop, Shafaat brings tablas, sitars and surbahars
into the classroom. Students learn how to tune and play the instruments
and vocalize the Indian musical scales and learn selected drum
compositions. Students are encouraged to bring their own instruments so
