A History of Jewish Music

RESIDENCY: The Town Band – Der Shteyl Orkestra
This residency is highly recommended for vocal and instrumental music students. Klezmer music is a spirited folk music, which was passed down orally from musician to musician. In keeping with this tradition, Jason and Rachel teach Klezmer melodies to students utilizing a "learning by ear" technique. Students will recognize and play rhythms typical of Klezmer music. Instrumental music students learn Klezmer-based scales and work on improvisational skills. Vocal music students learn Jewish vocal music, wordless melodies, harmonization and vocal arranging. Residency culminates in a performance lead by and featuring the students.
