trombonist Rachel Lemisch and pianist/vocalist/ harmonica player Jason
Rosenblatt demonstrate three generations of Central and Eastern
European Jewish music. Through instrumental and vocal performances,
students learn the role that music plays in Jewish culture as well as
gaining insight into its role in Jewish lifecycle events. This program
illustrates the influences of Middle Eastern, European, and American
cultures on the development of Jewish music.

RESIDENCY: The Town Band – Der
Shteyl Orkestra This residency is highly recommended
for vocal and instrumental music students. Klezmer music is a spirited
folk music, which was passed down orally from musician to musician. In
keeping with this tradition, Jason and Rachel teach Klezmer melodies to
students utilizing a "learning by ear" technique. Students will
recognize and play rhythms typical of Klezmer music. Instrumental music
students learn Klezmer-based scales and work on improvisational skills.
Vocal music students learn Jewish vocal music, wordless melodies,
harmonization and vocal arranging. Residency culminates in a
performance lead by and featuring the students.
