West African Dances

This women's dance ensemble presents dances from West Africa and Cuba, teaching students about the connections between continental and Diasporan communities. Kulu Mele also demonstrates the integral roles of costume and drumming in traditional dance. This educational presentation combines lessons in history, social studies and the humanities, and includes selections from Kulu Mele's vast repertoire, including the Fulani dance from West African, Yakadi from Guinea and student participatory dances, Che Che Kole from Ghana and Fanga from Liberia.

Workshop: Babaluye (2 dancers/1 drummer)
This dance workshop teaches the music and movements to Babaluaye and Yemoja, two of the deities of the Yoruba. The Yoruba people are a number of semi-independent peoples loosely linked by geography, language, history, and religion. They live in the present day West African countries of Nigeria, Benin and Togo with a population of 25 million.
