West African Dances
(1 Dancer, 2 Musicians)
Students explore the origins and significance of the rhythms and
movements of West African dance. They also learn about the cultures
from which the dances originate, influences on modern American dance,
and the important roles dance, movement and music play in the lives of
West African peoples. Most importantly, students learn the
interconnectedness of sound, visual expression and movement in West
African arts. Dorothy Wilkie serves as the ensemble's Artistic Director
and has studied with Afro-Cuban and Senegalese dance masters in the
U.S. and in Guinea and Havana.
