Introduction to Blues, Ragtime & Jazz

Incorporating the romping, stomping, finger picking styles of influential blues guitarists Blind Blake and Robert Johnson, vocalist, Blues and Ragtime jazz guitarist, Brad Litwin combines his talents to introduce students to musical styles of the 1920’s and 30’s. Audience participation is an integral part of Brad’s lively and informative performance.

WORKSHOP: Let’s Write a Blues Song
In this workshop, students gain an appreciation of lyrical poetry through the exploration of musical style, rhyme schemes, rhythmic forms, cadence and the 12 bar Blues chord progression. Students learn how to translate a story into lyrics while Brad accompanies them on guitar.

$140 per workshop following performance



RESIDENCY: Blues, Jazz & Ragtime -- Making Connections
This residency gives students a deeper appreciation of the roots and historical context of the American musical styles of Blues, Jazz and Ragtime. The key elements of Brad’s residency include: an understanding of the geographical and historical influences on Blues music; examples of period poetry and how it translates into lyrics; identifying the lyrical style using minor and major keys; and, a chance for students to showcase what they’ve learned during a school performance.

$300 per day (5 day minimum)
